About the role
Merck Research Laboratories is hiring an Associate Director of External Discovery Chemistry to provide scientific and operational leadership across its UK and European Contract Research Organization (CRO) partner network. The role integrates CRO contributions into drug discovery project objectives, enabling molecular design, structure-activity relationship development, synthetic route planning, and resolution of complex synthetic chemistry problems, with up to 40% domestic/international travel to CRO sites. Requires a PhD in Chemistry or a closely related discipline, multi-year experience in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, and familiarity with X-ray crystallography/structure-guided design and digital chemistry/data-science tools.
