Vertex Pharmaceuticals is hiring an Optics / Microscopy Principal Scientist for its Engineering & Applied Physics group (a 20-person team building custom instruments for drug discovery) in San Diego, CA. The role bridges science and engineering: collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams to identify where custom instrumentation can drive impact, designing and building prototype optical instruments, running proof-of-concept experiments and assay optimization, and partnering with engineers to develop production-ready instruments for automated drug discovery. Requires a PhD in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Bioengineering or a related field with 8+ years of experience, hands-on expertise designing novel imaging platforms for biological research (fluorescence, confocal, light sheet, super-resolution, or two-photon microscopy), formal optical design knowledge, programming proficiency, and automation/high-throughput screening background.
