About the role

As part of its strategic development, the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) is committed to the continued advancement of its flagship research areas in Molecular Cell Biology, Neurosciences, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Oncology under the overarching theme of Metabolic Plasticity. UMG pursues a strong translational research strategy and serves as a partner site of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), and the German Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ). Located on the Göttingen Campus, UMG is closely integrated with the University’s life and natural sciences departments as well as with the numerous non-university research institutes (from e.g. Max Planck Gesellschaft, Leibniz-Gemeinschaft) on campus. The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University Medical Center Göttingen invites applications for a Professorship (W2 Tenure-Track) Functional Neuroanatomy and Neurotechnologies to be filled at the earliest possible date. The initial appointment will be for a period of five years. Following a positive evaluation, the successful candidate will be appointed to a permanent W2 professorship without a renewed call for applications (tenure-track). We seek an internationally recognized scientist who will represent the field of Functional Neuroanatomy in both research and teaching by integrating modern neurotechnological and quantitative approaches. Applicants are expected to have an independent, internationally visible research program addressing the structural and functional organization of neuronal systems across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Candidates should possess demonstrated expertise in modern experimental and/or analytical approaches in neuroscience, for example in areas such as super-resolution or functional microscopy, optical or electronic neurotechnologies, neuroengineering, or data-driven analysis of neuronal networks. The proposed research program should align with the strategic research priorities of the University Medical Center Göttingen, particularly in the field of neuroscience and within the overarching theme of Metabolic Plasticity. Applicants are expected to have successfully completed a positively evaluated junior professorship, a habilitation, or to demonstrate equivalent academic achievements. They should have established an independent scientific profile, reflected by an outstanding publication record and a successful track record in acquiring competitive third-party funding. The professorship will be embedded within the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and is expected to further strengthen its research profile in Functional Neuroanatomy and Neurotechnological Methods. Demonstrated teaching excellence and a strong commitment to teaching anatomy (gross anatomy and histology) and neurobiology in the degree programs of Human Medicine, Dentistry, and related programs are expected. Further requirements for appointment as a professor are governed by Section 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz) in its current version. The University Medical Center Göttingen holds the right to appoint professors. Applications from outstanding researchers worldwide are strongly encouraged. The University Medical Center Göttingen is committed to increasing the proportion of women in senior academic positions and therefore particularly welcomes applications from qualified women. Candidates with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if equally qualified. Please submit your application electronically via the appointment portal at https://berufungsportal.umg.eu no later than 31 October 2026. For further information regarding the advertised professorship, please contact Prof. Valentin Nägerl, Director of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, at valentin.nagerl@med.uni-goettingen.de. For technical questions concerning the appointment portal, please contact berufungsportal@med.uni-goettingen.de.
