About the role

The School of Engineering at EPFL is seeking a faculty member for the Institute of Materials (IMX), sponsored by Rolex, focused on tribology, contact mechanics, and surface and interface engineering. Research interests span the physics, chemistry, and mechanics of friction, wear, adhesion, and lubrication; contact mechanics across length scales; tribocorrosion and environmental surface degradation; and protective and functional coatings, bridging atomistic phenomena to engineered component performance. The position is based on EPFL's Neuchâtel campus. The role is offered at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, with exceptional candidates considered for tenured Associate Professor. A PhD, an outstanding academic record, demonstrated scientific impact, and a commitment to teaching, mentoring, and technology transfer with industry are required. Application deadline 1 December 2026.
