About the role

The University of Birmingham's School of Chemistry is offering a 3.5-year, industrially sponsored PhD studentship in partnership with AWE on computational chemistry-driven design of improved thermal batteries. The project will use state-of-the-art computational chemistry techniques to understand structure-property relationships in thermal battery materials, aiming to clarify the mechanisms controlling performance and develop design principles for new materials. Candidates should hold, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline, with strong analytical and creative thinking skills. Funding covers a tax-free stipend and UK home-rate tuition fees; the studentship is only open to applicants who qualify for the UK home fees rate. Closes 1 January 2027.
