About the role
The University of Birmingham's School of Engineering is offering a PhD Studentship on the Physics of Learning in Robotic Metamaterials, combining table-top experiments with theoretical modelling of active mechanical metamaterials and distributed robotic systems. The project involves developing decentralized learning techniques for networks of active mechanical units, capturing nonlinear dynamics through theory and numerical simulation, and designing and performing robotic experiments in unpredictable environments.
Ideal candidates hold an excellent MSc/MPhys/MEng degree (or equivalent) in physics, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field, with interest in the intersection of materials, machines, robotics, and nonlinear dynamics. The studentship covers fees and stipend at UKRI rates for 42 months; currently open to UK home students only. Closes 6 January 2027.
