About the role
An ESA-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the University of Exeter, running October 1, 2026 to January 13, 2028, split 80% on PREDICT (early warning signals for terrestrial tipping points) and 20% on EO4TIPP (an Earth-observation architecture for monitoring Earth-system tipping points). The fellow will conduct original research on early-warning signals for terrestrial tipping points, analyzing Earth observation and CMIP6 climate model datasets to detect statistical precursors of critical transitions in systems like the Amazon rainforest and dryland vegetation, and will contribute to evaluating monitoring capabilities for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
A relevant PhD in climate science, Earth system science, environmental physics, or a related field is required, with essential experience working with Earth observation data and CMIP6 climate model output; familiarity with terrestrial tipping systems, AMOC literature, or funded-project management is desirable. Starting salary is from £43,482 on Grade F, depending on knowledge, skills, and experience. Application deadline October 14, 2026.
