About the role
The University of Exeter's Department of Physics (Williams Lab) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Fellow for SPECTROMETA, an EPSRC-funded project combining metamaterial emitters that shape infrared illumination with photoacoustic detection to identify substances in environmental samples. The three-year post (February 2027-January 2030) involves leading development of metamaterial emitters and resonant acoustic cavities spanning modelling, nanofabrication, and sensing experiments, investigating sensitivity and selectivity, exploring AI-assisted inverse design, using cleanroom and imaging facilities for device fabrication, and collaborating with the Met Office and South West Water on environmental applications.
Candidates need a relevant PhD (or equivalent experience) in physics, photonics, or engineering, with depth in mid-infrared spectroscopic sensing, metamaterial thermal emitters, instrumentation development, or related nanofabrication/characterization techniques, plus a record of independent research outputs. Salary is £35,302 to £44,352 annually depending on grade and experience.
