About the role

Andrew Wiles Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG We are currently inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mathematical Modelling of Batteries to work with Professor Jon Chapman at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford. This is a 41-month, fixed-term position, funded by the Faraday Institution. The successful candidate will be expected to be in post by 1 November 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will undertake research in battery modelling within the Multi-Scale Mathematical Modeling Project (MSM) of the Faraday Institution. They will carry out fundamental research in asymptotics, homogenisation and numerics to develop, analyse and solve models of the coupled electrochemistry, mechanics and heat flow that determine the behaviour of batteries. The main focus of the research at the Mathematical Institute relates to modelling thermo-chemo-mechanical degradation. The postholder will be a member of the combined Oxford team involving mathematics and engineering and will interact with researchers across the wider Multi-Scale Mathematical Modeling Project and with industrial collaborators. They will contribute to research publications and present results at conferences and meetings. There will be opportunities to contribute a small amount of teaching to the department, of at most three hours a week during the academic terms.
