About the role
Uppsala University is hiring a PhD student in Bioinformatics/Evolutionary Microbiology, based at the Biomedical Centre, for a Swedish Research Council-funded project titled "A Two-Billion-Year History of Infections: Evolution of Host-Adaptation in Early Gammaproteobacteria," supervised by Associate Professor Lionel Guy. Responsibilities include assembling genomes from deep-branching intracellular Gammaproteobacteria (including 30 novel Legionella species), reconstructing evolutionary histories, analyzing metabolic potential, and identifying host-adaptation genes and horizontal gene transfers.
Candidates need a Master's degree in bioinformatics, molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field (completed by March 2027), documented coding skills in Python or R, experience with metagenomics and molecular evolution methods, and proficiency in English. High-performance computing and large-dataset handling experience, plus DNA extraction/sequencing library prep experience, are desirable. Applications close 29 October 2026.
