About the role

Two fully-funded PhD positions within the EU-funded QUEST Doctoral Network at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences. Candidates will conduct experimental research on electron-light interactions in silicon photonic nanostructures: one project enhances electron-light interactions in tailored nanostructures using flexible geometries and variable beam energies, the other explores hybrid devices coupling local quantum states to electron beams. Work combines photonic device design, electron microscope experiments, and numerical simulation. Candidates need a master's degree in physics, chemistry, or engineering with an excellent academic record and demonstrated strength in electron microscopy, nano-optics, integrated photonics, or quantum optics. Full-time, 39-hour week, 36-month contract starting January 1, 2027. Mobility rule applies: candidates must not have resided in Germany for more than 12 months in the three years prior to recruitment. Application deadline November 1, 2026.
