PhD studentship: Physical intelligence in robotic materials
University of Birmingham · Birmingham, England, UK
About the role
PhD studentship in the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham, on 'Physical intelligence in robotic materials' — self-learning active mechanical networks combining experimental and theoretical work. The project explores how robotic materials (mechanical networks with distributed sensors and actuators) can adapt and function without centralized control, inspired by biological systems, including decentralized learning techniques, nonlinear dynamics modeling/simulation, and table-top robotic experiments in unpredictable environments. Stipend of £21,805 per annum for 42 months (UK students; international candidates should inquire about funding). Applicants need an MSc/MPhys/MEng in physics, engineering, computer science, robotics or applied mathematics. Intended start: Autumn 2026 or January 2027.
