About the role
The University of Bristol's School of Biochemistry is recruiting a Senior Research Associate in Protein Engineering to join Professor Ashley Toye's group studying red blood cell biology, funded by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) on a six-month contract ending March 2027. Responsibilities include designing, producing, and characterizing recombinant proteins and investigating their interactions with red blood cells, via molecular cloning, bacterial protein expression, affinity and size-exclusion chromatography, flow cytometry, and microfluidic flow systems.
Candidates need a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, protein engineering, synthetic biology, or a related discipline, with practical experience in recombinant DNA methods, bacterial protein expression, and protein purification. Experience with red blood cell biology, mammalian expression, enzyme assays, microfluidics, or computational protein design is advantageous. The role is full-time (35 hours/week), fixed-term through March 2027, paying £44,746 to £50,253 per annum (Grade J).
