About the role
BlackSky operates a space-based intelligence platform, providing satellite imagery, automated analytics, and high-frequency monitoring to military, intelligence, and commercial customers. This Senior Engineer joins the Mission Planning Engineering team developing and maintaining autonomous operations for BlackSky's satellite constellation: writing system-level requirements and prototype code (Python or Go) for autonomous imaging/tasking planning algorithms (point target, strip mapping, pushbroom scanning), modeling satellite subsystems (communications, power, attitude), and supporting live constellation operations, including occasional 24/7 coverage during launch, early operations, or anomaly response.
Requires a bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace/mechanical engineering, systems engineering, or computer science; at least 6 years of relevant experience; experience with planning/optimization algorithms and automating complex systems; working knowledge of Go or Python; and US citizenship (ITAR). Satellite or aerial-imagery mission-planning and orbital-mechanics experience is preferred. Based in Seattle, WA or Herndon, VA, with remote US candidates considered; the anticipated salary range for the Seattle, WA level is $120,000-$145,000 per year.
