About the role
The University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering (NanoManufacturing group) is recruiting a Research Assistant/Associate in Emulsion Templating of Battery Materials, creating architected materials via protein-guided assembly in micro-emulsion templates to reduce reliance on rare earths and critical minerals in Li-ion battery cathodes and magnets, in collaboration with teams at Liverpool and the Netherlands. Responsibilities include developing scalable droplet-generation tools (membrane emulsification, ink-jet printing), creating templates for protein-guided assembly and bio-mineralisation, and evaluating structured materials in Li-ion battery applications.
Applicants need a PhD or be close to obtaining one; preferred experience includes emulsion-templating, colloidal self-assembly, or Li-ion battery research, with a background in physical chemistry, engineering, or materials science. The post runs 18 months (or until 1 March 2028), paying £33,002 to £46,049 depending on grade and experience (Research Assistant or Research Associate).
